Infertility Q & A

What is Infertility?

A doctor diagnoses a woman as being infertile if the patient cannot get pregnant after one year of unprotected sexual intercourse. Infertility is a medical condition that causes dysfunction in the male or female reproductive system.

Infertility is widespread in the United States, according to the National Infertility Association, with about 1 in 8 couples having trouble becoming pregnant or sustaining a pregnancy. About a third of these cases are the result of the woman having a reproductive problem, another third are attributed to trouble with the man’s reproductive system, and the last third resulting from reproductive issues for both the man and woman.

What Do Basic Infertility Services Include?

There are basic infertility services and more advanced treatments. Basic infertility services include prevention and management of miscarriages, ovulation monitoring, ovulation induction, and insemination. Some women have trouble getting pregnant because of problems relating to the timing of ovulation; ovulation monitoring helps these patients determine when ovulation occurs. Ovulation induction, sometimes known as fertility drugs, stimulates egg production in the ovaries. Insemination involves introducing washed and concentrated sperm into a woman’s uterus.

What Do Advanced Infertility Services Include?

Advanced infertility services include a number of assisted reproductive technologies. During in vitro fertilization (IVF), a man’s sperm and a woman’s egg are combined in a laboratory dish before implantation of the fertilized egg into the woman’s uterus. If there extra fertilized eggs left over, a woman may choose embryo cryopreservation, which is the process of freezing an embryo for future pregnancies.

A woman can donate her healthy eggs to another woman in a procedure known as egg donation or oocyte donation. Intracytoplasmic sperm injections (ICSIs) inject sperm directly into the egg. Preimplantation genetic screening (PGS) looks for genetic defects in an embryo.
