4 STDs and How to Prevent Them

4 STDs and How to Prevent Them

Have you or someone close to you ever been concerned about sexually transmitted diseases (STDs)? You're not alone. Each day across the globe, over one million adults get an STD. Every year, over 20 million new STD cases are reported in America.

At the private practice of board-certified OB/GYN provider Shamsah Amersi, MD, in Santa Monica, California, our team prioritizes your sexual health. It provides comprehensive information and care for STDs.

Keep reading as we discuss four common STDs and how to protect yourself and those you love from infection.

1. Gonorrhea

Gonorrhea, caused by bacteria, can be transmitted through oral, anal, or vaginal contact. Often silent, its symptoms can be easily overlooked or mistaken for more benign conditions, such as urinary tract infections.

For women, ignoring gonorrhea can have lasting impacts, affecting fertility and overall reproductive health. Thankfully, when detected, it's typically treated effectively with a combination of antibiotics.

Does swelling of the vulva, irregular bleeding, pain during sex, or burning sensations when urinating sound familiar? These could be signals your body sends, emphasizing the need for a screening.

2. Chlamydia

Another bacterial infection that's often sneaky is chlamydia. With around 3 million cases reported annually in the US, it's alarmingly common.

Though many individuals may not showcase early symptoms, neglecting treatment can lead to complications like pelvic inflammatory disease in women, potentially causing infertility. Initial symptoms might include a burning sensation during urination and unusual discharge.

Recognize any of these signs? It's crucial to consult with Dr. Amersi. As with gonorrhea, antibiotics are the go-to treatment, and remember—you can get chlamydia more than once, so be sure to continue to use protection after treatment.

3. Herpes

The herpes simplex virus, unlike the first two, is a viral infection, and there's currently no cure. Divided into two types, HSV-1 (typically affecting the mouth) and HSV-2 (typically affecting the genitals), it can be transmitted through kissing or sexual contact.

Symptoms range from sores in affected areas to flu-like indicators, including fever and fatigue. Since herpes is a virus, antibiotics won't help, but antiviral medications can manage and reduce flare-ups.

If you're experiencing or worried about any of these symptoms, discussing them with Dr. Amersi is vital for your health.

4. Human papillomavirus (HPV)

The human papillomavirus (HPV), with over 40 known types, is an incredibly common viral infection. Many strains remain symptomless, but certain ones can lead to cervical cancer, especially for women.

Regular screenings, like a Pap smear, are critical. Plus, did you know there are vaccines against some of the more dangerous strains of HPV? These are a critical preventive measure. Dr. Amersi can discuss whether you're eligible for this vaccine.

Preventing STDs

So, what can we do to protect ourselves from these STDs? First and foremost, always use protection. While other forms of birth control might prevent pregnancies, condoms are your best defense against STDs.

Regular STD screenings, regardless of age or gender, should be on everyone's checklist. It's a simple, effective way of keeping tabs on your sexual health and preventing the spread of these common infections.

Being open about your risk is another safeguard. Whether it's with your partner or your provider, discussing your sexual history, habits, or concerns is vital. Knowledge, after all, is power. The more you and your provider know, the better you are equipped to ensure your well-being.

STDs might seem overwhelming, but they become much less daunting with the right information, preventive measures, and regular check-ins with Dr. Amersi. Remember, your sexual health matters.
